ELA-Mrs. Fowler

This week I will begin reading Amber Brown Is Not a Crayon aloud to all classes.  Research has shown that a child’s listening comprehension improves through challenging read-aloud stories.  For this reason, I will be reading a little of this chapter book each day.  It is a great story and I’m sure the kids will love it.   We will discuss the book in class and do some activities, but it is not for a grade.

Mrs. Stewart – Social Studies

This week the students have started doing warm ups when they first come into class to get them anchored and to serve as a refresher of the content learned the previous day or two.

Warm ups are to be copied from the board each day on the same sheet of paper for that week.  That paper will be turned in at the end of the week for a grade.  This also serves as an assessment of where the students are in their learning.

Students are graded on two things:  1.  Did he/she follow directions?  2.  Is the information he/she provided in the answer accurate?

I am happy to say that the majority of the students have done well with this task this week!  Please contact me via email if you have any questions.

Mrs. Stewart – Ga Regions Project

In the next week or so, our class will make an edible map of the different Georgia regions and will also include some of the rivers of Georgia.  I need parents to send in various colored candies to make the various landforms and regions.  I already have one parent volunteer who is making the cookies for my homeroom class.  Other classes will need to send in large tortilla shells unless I can get a volunteer to bake oversized cookies for each of the other classes.  Here are samples of candies you may send in:

M&M, Skittles, licorice, pixie stix, frosting, plastic knives, 500 count box of toothpicks, etc.

Please email me with any questions you may have.  Thanks!

Math

  • We have moved on to our next Module which covers skip-counting by ones, fives, and tens.
  • Students are expected to master math facts addition 0-18 and subtraction 0-18. In first grade addition 0-10 and subtraction 0-10 facts should have been masted.  In second grade we focus on addition 11-18 and subtraction 11-18.
  • In addition to our Modules, we have been reviewing addition 0-10 math facts with our daily math fact practice. I plan on giving the Grady County Basic Facts timed test over addition 0-10  on Friday, August 29.

AR Home Portal

Renaissance Home Connect is a program in Accelerated Reader which allows parents, guardians, and students to check student’s progress in Accelerated Reader and Math Facts in a Flash from home! They can access Renaissance Home Connect outside of school from any computer with an internet connection.  An informational letter with log on information for each student will be forthcoming in the student’s AR folder.
