Tonight your child will complete his/her spelling words for homework. Students are bringing home a “choice board sheet.” (Please return the choice board to school.) Students must choose THREE of the choices on the sheet to write their spelling words three different ways. Many students had difficulty with this center this week, so we are getting extra practice. It is important that students learn how to do these literacy groups/centers independently and correctly. We have already gone over how to do each of the choices on the choice board. The title, date, your child’s name and number should be on the top of the paper. Words should be written neatly and orderly.

I THINK I have added all students to our Journey’s reading series online. I am posting the link if you want to try and log on. There are some phenomenal resources online with this series. The student should use his/her AR login for the username and lunch number for the password.

Super Hero of the Week, August 28-Sept. 1: John Mark Herring

ELA—-The tests for Mr. Putter & Tabby Pour the Tea will be Thursday, Aug. 31. Please have your child read the story aloud to you at home at least twice before the test to help them prepare. If you sign the spelling sheet that they have read aloud to you, they will receive a reward. Students also have spelling word cards in the zipper pouch of their H.E.R.O. binders to assist with studying for the spelling test.

Math—-We have been working very hard on our timed addition 0-10 facts tests. These facts must be mastered for your child to succeed this year. They are given 3 minutes to answer 64 problems, and they can miss no more than 6 to pass. We practice math facts every single day in an effort to improve their speed and accuracy. We will be having another facts test next Thursday, Aug. 31. I will be sending practice fact sheets home as homework at least twice next week so you can time your child and practice at home. Please encourage them to use their touchpoints, NO FINGERS!!!! This is our rule in the classroom.

I want parents to know that I will be out next Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 29/30). I am part of our school’s PAGE Initiative Team and I have a workshop to attend. Mrs. Phyllis Todd will be my substitute. She is a very capable sub, and I know she and Mrs. Green will keep things running smooth while I am gone.

Finally, please look for a conference letter in your child’s H.E.R.O. binder next Monday. I want to schedule a “beginning of the year” conference with every parent/family and I would like to know when it is convenient for you to meet with me.

On Wednesday, August 30, we will have a test over My Family for Reading and spelling. Our Reading test will cover comprehension, phonics, recognizing complete sentences and using a glossary. Monday’s homework will be for students to re-read the story. Tuesday’s homework will be for students to write their spelling words three different ways. (A sheet will be sent home.) This is one of our literacy groups; however, students seem to need additional practice with this and following the complete directions. Please e-mail me if you have questions.

AR Stewart/Nelson HR

Your child’s AR goal for this 9 week term has been set. Your child can view this when he/she logs into AR. The website is: https://hosted330.renlearn.com/57258/ . If your child does not know his/her log in, it is in the yellow AR folder given to each student at the beginning of the year.

Additionally, our most recent story, Henry and Mudge, has an AR test. Students may also test on this when they have time.
