Wonder-The Movie

The movie Wonder is being released November 17, and will be playing at The Zebulon. Second grade is planning on taking students to see this movie. We will leave school at 8:15 am, the movie will last from approximately 9:00 am-11:00 am. Afterwards, we will enjoy a sack lunch in a nearby park. Permission slips will be sent home tomorrow. Due to limited seating, parents will not be permitted to attend this field trip. However, please do mark your calendar for our next one on April 11 to Joe Budd Youth Center. We will absolutely need chaperones on that trip!

Field trip: Nov. 17
Cost per student: $6.00
Money due by: Nov. 9

First Friday STEM-Stewart/Nelson

Our First Friday STEM Project is this Friday. Students are bringing home a paper tonight that they have worked on with their partner. Please sign this paper and have your child return it to school tomorrow. Students have created a materials list and have designated what materials he/she will need to bring in no later than this Friday. Students should have no more than ten materials on their list, which are to be divided among them. Please look for things around your house and/or Dollar Store for this project. I do not want anyone spending a lot of money on this! Let your child be creative with basic resources!

Stewart/Nelson First Friday STEM Day

Since we have just finished reading about different animals and their homes, I believe it would be good to have students design an animal habitat/home for our First Friday STEM day. Students will be given time Friday to work with a partner of their choosing to: 1. Choose an animal; 2. Plan a home to build; 3. Make a materials list; 4. Divide the materials between themselves; and 5. Bring in the materials before NEXT Friday. I will ask for students to write down their partner’s telephone number in case parents would like to communicate with one another.

Students will also be given time in class to research a few interesting facts about their animal and/or its habitat as well as create a diagram reflecting that animal’s life cycle.

Stewart/Nelson ELA

We are working on informational writing this 9 week period. We are currently working on an outline for a spider informational writing and will move onto The Whigham Way writing after this. Students need to work on the elaboration part or “tell me more” part of the outline. These are the details of the main or star ideas. I often remind them to keep their “writing car on track” and stay focused on the main/star idea.

We will continue to work on summarizing with our current Read Aloud, Wonder (beginning, middle, end). Also, the RACE (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain) strategy, which was introduced the first nine weeks, will continue to be taught. Students will begin to receive grades on restating and answering questions.

Our test for Animals Building Homes will be this Wednesday.

Finally, please remind students of the importance of doing their best on their monthly iStation test and each 9 week STAR Reading and Math tests.

Thank you for your parternship for an amazing year!
